Accident deaths at granite quarry at Ilippode near PTP Nagar

Thiruvananthapuram: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Tuesday directed Government officials to take steps to prevent accidents at the granite quarry at Ilippode near PTP Nagar where two boys drowned to death in a deep pit filled with water on Friday.

Commission chairman N. Dinakar, who visited the accident site, sought an explanation from the District Collector and the Corporation secretary on the circumstances that led to the tragedy.

Ten persons have lost their lives in the abandoned quarry. The two children who drowned on Friday had fallen into the deep pool after losing their footing on the slopes. The bodies were fished out by the Fire and Rescue Services.

The quarry owned by three individuals is 20 years old. There are several houses all around the steep sides. With no proper protection, the residents are exposed to the danger of plunging into the gorge from a height of 100 feet.

The Commission found that the wire fencing put up by the owners was not strong enough to prevent accidents.

Mr. Dinakar directed officials to take immediate action to fence the quarry and ensure that accidents do not recur. The officials have been asked to report back after the necessary steps are taken.
