Gangavaram to develop as an all-weather port State is second largest in cargo-handling
HYDERABAD:
Notwithstanding the controversies surrounding them, Gangavaram and Krishnapatnam ports will commence commercial operations in March and June next year respectively.
Having secured all the statutory clearances for project execution, work is progressing briskly at Gangavaram, an environment-friendly port. The socio-economic survey report for the year 2006-07 tabled in the Assembly by Finance Minister K. Rosaiah says that it was being developed as an all-weather port.
It would become the deepest port with round-the-clock operations and state-of-the-art cargo handling equipment. Commercial operations at Gangavaram are slated to begin in March next. Similarly, the Krishnapatnam Greenfield port in Nellore is scheduled to commence operations in June 2008.
The ports are expected to handle 173 million tonnes of cargo 15 years from now.
