HYDERABAD: The collaborative project on chickpea improvement between the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat) and a consortium from Western Australia will continue till 2009. The consortium comprises the Department of Agriculture and Food, Centre for Legumes in Mediterranean Agriculture and Council of Grain Growers' Organisation. This was announced on Tuesday during a visit to Icrisat at Patancheru, near here, by Western Australian Premier Alan J. Carpenter. He saw the progress made by the project, which aims to explore the pre-breeding of desi chickpea for disease and salinity tolerance for Western Australia (WA). Interacting with scientists working on the project, he hoped the project would help WA find varieties which were resistant to chick pea diseases. Deputy Director-General for Research, Icrisat, Dyno Keatinge, briefed the Premier. Mr. Carpenter said he would try to speak officials of Quantas Airlines to introduce a direct flight between Chennai and Perth.
