KOZHIKODE: The Canoly Canal Development Committee has demanded that the wastewater from different parts of the city let off into the canal ought to be purified. The annual meeting of the committee held here on Monday pointed out that the major portion of the canal had been de-silted, and de-siltation work was under way in the other stretch. Under the circumstances water let off into the canal from different parts of the city ought to be subjected to a purification process so that the canal can be utilised to the best, Tom Joseph, assistant executive engineer said at the meeting. Also, if the saline water was to enter the Canoly Canal as was the case earlier, the stretch where the canal joins the Kallayi river had to be de-silted on an urgent basis. The committee would also discuss with the Tourism department details of the beautification of the Canoly Canal footpath as part of the Sarovaram project. P. Balan, additional district magistrate and District Collector in-charge, presided. P.V. Vishwanathan, secretary, presented the report at the meeting.
