Stir against final award to be launched in Mandya on Friday

BANGALORE: Actor-turned-political leader M.H. Ambareesh will lead an apolitical protest by Mandya district Congress leaders from Friday against the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

Announcing this at a press conference in Bangalore on Tuesday, Congress legislators and leaders from Mandya district appealed to farmers, people and political leaders of the entire Cauvery basin in Karnataka to join the protest to be launched in Mandya.

Mandya District Congress Committee president Chandrashekar said the protest would gradually be extended to other parts of the State. Mr. Ambareesh, whose resignation as a Union Minister and as a member of the Lok Sabha is yet to be accepted, had agreed to lead the protest, he said. He made it clear that the protest would be peaceful.

Mr. Chandrashekar said Mr. Ambareesh had refused to withdraw his resignation despite a plea by Mandya district Congress leaders to continue as Minister and MP.

Asked why Mr. Ambareesh had not sent his resignation letter in the required format if at all he was keen on resigning, the Congress leader L.R. Shivarame Gowda said steps were being taken by the MP to fulfil such "legal requirements."

At the same time, he asserted that everybody in the Cauvery basin wanted Mr. Ambareesh to continue in the Government.

"If at all it is possible to get justice for the State through resignations, then the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda should first quit as an MP and the Janata Dal (S)-BJP Government headed by his son should step down through en masse resignation," he said.

S.M. Shankar, MLC, expressed dissatisfaction over the Government delaying taking a stand on the tribunal award.

He also took exception to the matter not being debated in the ongoing session of the legislature.
