Iron ore seized

BELLARY: The mobile squad of the Forest Department in Bellary has seized 13 lorries on charge of transporting iron ore illegally. The value of the ore seized has been put at Rs. 1.95 lakh.

P. Rajashekaran, Deputy Conservator of Forests, mobile squad, in a press release said that at the time of verification of documents, it was found that there was only a trip sheet and no permits issued by the departments of Forests and Mines and Geology to transport the ore. Trip sheets indicated that the ore belonged to Trident Minerals. No arrests have been made. A case has been registered.

Interactive meet

HASSAN: The Hassan District Journalists' Union along with Amogh News will organise an interactive programme on the Cauvery issue. Union president Shivananda Tagadur said the tribunal judgment was unscientific and unfair to Karnataka. The programme will be held at the Youth Hostel meeting hall here on Wednesday at 8.30 a.m. Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha president Kodihalli Chandrasekhar, artist K.T. Shiva Prasad, senior advocate K.A. Krishna Swamy, senior journalist R.P. Venkatesh Murthy and Hemavathi-Cauvery Neeru Horata Samithi president Gururaj Hebbar will address the gathering. MYSORE: A free bone mineral density camp has been organised at Bharath Diagnostic Centre on Irwin Road from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on February 21, according to a release from the centre's vice-president M. Jayaram.

Meeting

SIRSI: The country was witnessing lack of good leadership and it was rare to find pro-active organisations. Both corruption and casteism were ruining the country, said journalist Patil Puttappa. He was speaking at a function organised by Karnataka Students Federation here on Sunday.

He said the expenditure on the recently concluded Shimoga Sahitya Sammelan was unnecessary when 130 taluks in the State were reeling under drought. — Correspondent

Cancer detection

MYSORE: A free cancer detection clinic will be conducted at Preethi Cancer Centre at Lakshmipuram from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on February 23.

According to a release, those suffering from abnormal bleeding, swelling, lump or hardness in any part of the body, change of voice, difficulty in swallowing or sore throat have been advised to undergo a check up. Dharna withdrawn

GULBARGA: The Janata Dal (United) has withdrawn its plans to stage a dharna demanding a probe into the alleged irregularities in the working of the Gulbarga City Corporation (GCC), after the State Government promised to look into the issue. Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pandey has also promised to probe the allegations made. — Staff Correspondent

Government urge to make stand clear

BANGALORE: Vatal Nagaraj, MLA, has asked the State Government to make its stand clear on the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

Mr. Nagaraj told presspersons here on Monday that Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy should give his reaction to the award.

The State Government should either support the agitation launched by Kannada activists or challenge the verdict in the Supreme Court. Kannada activists would lay siege to the Vidhana Soudha in Bangalore and revenue offices in the districts on February 24, he said.

BANGALORE: The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences has announced the results of the 3rd and final year B.Pharm (96-97) batch, 1st, 2nd and 3rd year B.Sc. Medical Lab Technology (RS batch) and 2nd, 3rd and final year B.Sc. Nursing Basic (96-97 batch) examinations conducted during October/November 2006.

Training for people with disabilities

Bangalore: The Devaraj Urs Backward Classes Development Corporation will train people with disabilities to use sewing machines.

Backward class candidates between the ages of 18 and 35 who have studied up to the 8th standard and whose annual family income is less than Rs. 22,000 are eligible to apply for the one-month workshop. Those interested may apply to the corporation by February 21. — Staff Reporter

Perikal Mallappa rejoins Congress

Bangalore: The former Minister Perikal M. Mallappa and S.G. Narayana Swamy have been re-admitted to the Congress, according to a Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee press release. They left the party in 2004 and had now rejoined, the release said. — Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: State Bharatiya Janata Party president D.V. Sadananda Gowda has announced the appointment of district organising general secretaries.

Chittabrata Mazumdar mourned

BANGALORE: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions has mourned the death of Chittabrata Mazumdar, CPI(M) MP. In a statement, State Committee Secretary V.J.K. Nair said, "We are deeply shocked to lean about the death of Chittabrata Mazumdar, who was re-elected barely a month ago as the All-India general secretary."

Chittada, as he was known, was general secretary of the West Bengal CITU. Earlier, he had been the Small Scale Industries Minister in Jyoti Basu's Cabinet. — Staff Reporter
