BELLARY: As many as 32 villages in seven taluks of Bellary districts have been selected under the Suvarna Gramodaya Yojana announced by the Government.

These villages would be developed with a stress on non-farming sectors at an estimated total cost of Rs. 36.80 crore. The funds have been allocated by the Government, official sources told The Hindu here on Tuesday.

The programme is likely to be launched in a village in Gulbarga district by President of India Abdul Kalam on February 25. Each village with a population of less than 8,000 would be provided with funds ranging between Rs. 50 lakh and Rs. 1.5 crore. Based on the allocation, the zilla panchayat authorities after assessing the infrastructure have undertaken a survey of these villages with regard to the number of houses, number of unemployed youths, their qualification and skills, and the kind of income-generating activities to be developed besides improving infrastructure such as roads, drains, high schools and junior colleges. Care has been taken to keep in mind the projected population in the next ten years while preparing the project.
