Bidar
Staff Correspondent
BIDAR: Lack of awareness is the main cause for the spread of HIV/AIDS in villages, gynaecologist and HIV expert Arati Raghu has said. She was interacting with members of self-help groups and students during an awareness programme at the Government High School in Janawada of Bidar taluk on Tuesday.
Efforts made
Ms. Raghu said that efforts by Government agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) over the decades to spread awareness on the disease had contributed to its control in cities.
Hygienic practices
She said the use of safe and hygienic practices also helped control the spread of AIDS. Modern research had shown that such practices could also prevent the spread of the HIV virus from the mother to the child, she said. The Government was offering free counselling programmes on such issues at its Prevention of Parent To Child Transmission Centres, she added.
`Serious matter'
President of the "Real Life" NGO Gandharva Sena said that the problem of HIV should not be taken lightly as it was spreading fast in the country. Field Publicity Officer Shivasharanappa and District Health Education Officer Bheemanna Bhavikatti were present.
