JAIPUR: Social audits of implementation of the much talked about National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme were carried out at gram sabhas in 11gram panchayats of Udaipur district in Rajasthan on Monday. Senior officials of the Departments of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, CAD and others from 16 States, besides activist groups and public attended the audits, forming part of an ongoing four-day-long second national workshop on social audit. The Udaipur workshop is the second after a similar exercise held in Hyderabad in 2006 by the Union Ministry of Rural Development. The participating States are Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Assam, West Bengal, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Rules and formats
The workshop, which would be attended by Union Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad on Wednesday, the concluding day, is expected to draw a broad outline on the rules and formats for social auditing for States besides working on a manual as well as a model plan on budgetary needs for social audits. Magsaysay Award winner Aruna Roy and economist Jean Dreze are participating in the workshop. The gram sabhas for social audits were chosen from 11 tehsils of Udaipur. Udaipur at present employs over 1-lakh people under NREGS. The Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan and other civic groups had carried out the first extensive district level social audit the previous year in Dungarpur, another tribal district.
