BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh Assembly proceedings were adjourned on Tuesday after members paid homage to former Chief Minister Shyama Charan Shukla, eminent Sindhi community leader Sant Hirdaram and others.
When the House met in the morning, the Speaker, Ishwardas Rohani, made a mention of the contribution of Mr. Shukla, Sant Hirdaram, former Union Minister of State Sukhbans Kaur, former Rajya Sabha member Mohammed Ali Ansari, and former MLAs Narhari Prasad Sharma, Mahesh Datt Mishra, Ramesh Chandra
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said Mr. Shukla had a pleasant personality and represented truly clean politics. He was always polite and never acted with vengeance or vendetta, Mr. Singh added.
Narrating a "shloka" from Bhagwad Gita, he said Mr. Shukla worked selflessly for the larger good of the people. Mr. Singh gave him credit for ushering in the Green Revolution in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh while offering his condolence to the departed leader.
The leader of the Opposition, Jamuna Devi, said she had had the opportunity to work with Mr. Shukla.
He would be remembered particularly for his contribution in the irrigation sector, she added. The members observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to the late leaders before the House was adjourned for the day.
