LEAVING NO SPACE: Traffic jams are a common sight during marriage season in Berhampur. Photo: Lingaraj Panda
BERHAMPUR: A road passing through a street can get blocked to be transformed into a dining hall in the city during the marriage season which brings in hardship to residents which they prefer to suffer silently. "In no other urban areas of the State, street roads are blocked completely for marriage feasts but people of the city have started to accept this as it has become common," says S. Mohapatra, a resident. Increase in the number marriages on particular days during a marriage season and dearth of adequate number of halls and `kalyanamandaps' in the city is a major reason behind it, says C.R. Das, a senior citizen. According to him, earlier there were open spaces at every street which were being converted into marriage pandals and dining halls. But construction of tightly packed houses in all areas has no scope for any open space. Added to it, families also want to celebrate the occasion in their own locality. They do not realise totally blocking a public road is an offence and one has to take permission to hold rallies or functions on roads. If any one protests against these marriage road blockades they are pacified with the quote that it is the tradition of Berhampur. Police officials say a large number of marriage processions do not take police permission. As marriage processions do not provide data regarding their route chart and time of procession to the police, these processions usually create great traffic problem.
