SWASTI: A show by the master artist
As the master of contemporary art Syed Haider Raza turns 85 on Thursday, a series of events titled "Swasti" are being organised in the Capital. Swasti will feature fine arts, poetry, classical music and dance. The artists and performers at the weeklong festival will all be Raza awardees from across the country. Raza Foundation, a trust created by Raza, has been giving awards to young practitioners of significance in the fields of art, poetry, music and dance. The multi-arts festival will see the release of a large format book on the life and journey of S. H. Raza at Taj Mahal Hotel on Thursday. Written and edited by Ashok Vajpeyi and published by Art Alive Gallery, the book, titled "Raza: A Life in Art", features extracts from Raza's statements about his art, comprehensive up-to-date information about his life and art, and rare photographs of his early works. In conjunction with the Swasti festival, the National Gallery of Modern Art will organise a show of selected works of Raza from February 22 to March 18 at its premises in Delhi. A month-long group show of abstract works by Raza awardees will open at Art Alive Gallery in the Capital on Friday. The show, which will see the participation of artists like Manish Pushkale, Rahim Mirza, Saba Hasan, Sanju Jain, Seema Ghurayya, Smriti Dixit, Sujata Bajaj and Yogendra Tripathi, will be inaugurated by S. H. Raza. A poetry festival will be held at Alliance Francaise de Delhi on Saturday. A three-day performing art festival will open on Monday at Kamani Auditorium. Malavika Sarukkai from Chennai will give a Bharatanatyam performance, while Prerna Shrimali from Delhi will perform Kathak. In music, Mukul Shivaputra from Devas and Satyasheel Deshpande from Pune will give a vocal recital. A seminar on Raza's works will be held on February 28 at India International Centre Annexe. -- Madhur Tankha
