TAMBARAM : Finding means to fight pollution of waterbodies in the city's surburbs: this is the mandate of a team of researchers from the Centre for Environmental Studies in Anna University. The team, consisting of K. Dhanasekaran, Director, K. N. Vasudevan and Dirk Walther, and officials of the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply visited the lakes and ponds. They said the project `Feasibility Studies For Bio-Remediation of Contaminated Water Bodies' was entrusted to the CES one month ago. The officials said the one-year project would explore application of the forms of technology to use `effective micro organisms' to combat pollution and contamination. Three classes of waterbodies stagnant, semi-stagnant and running would be taken up during the study, they said, adding they had selected Mambalam drain as one of the water bodies. They had also identified the sewage treatment plant at Nesapakkam for their study, they added. They visited Tambaram to identify a few contaminated waterbodies as part of the pilot project. If the project succeeded here, it would be extended to other waterbodies in Chennai, surrounding places and also all over Tamil Nadu, the officials added. The team started its work, inspecting tanks in West Tambaram before visiting the Nellooramman Koil Tank, Raja Iyer Kulam and tanks in Balaji Nagar and Bharathi Nagar in East Tambaram. A. Janakiraman, former Chairman of Tambaram Municipality, and R. Sekar, Municipal Commissioner, accompanied the officials.
