CHENNAI: The Union Finance Ministry will set up a large taxpayer unit in Chennai to provide corporate/business units that have a minimum turnover of Rs.10 crore with a single window service for payment of Central Excise, Service Tax, and Income Tax. Speaking at an interaction with taxpayers, chartered accountants and representatives of the chambers of commerce, the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Chennai-I, C.R. Ravichandran, said the unit, with the Central Excise Department as its nodal agency, would start functioning from May 1. It will have a separate office. Following the success of the pilot unit in Bangalore, the Department planned 50 units. Nearly 22 enterprises had agreed to opt for the service in Chennai. The Department was willing to arrange a trip for large taxpayers in Chennai to Bangalore have a firsthand knowledge of the functioning of the unit.
Duplicate PAN cards
Mr. Ravichandran appealed to people to help in the Department's drive to weed out duplicate Permanent Account Number (PAN) cards. J. Albert, Additional Commissioner of IT (Headquarters-Administration), Chennai, said the meeting was the third in the series organised by the Department in Chennai to drive home the message that the Department was friendly to those who paid the taxes promptly.
