Hurt in LPG cylinder blast

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: A 28-year-old man was injured seriously when an LPG cylinder exploded in the early hours at a house here on Tuesday.

Police identified the victim as S Senthil alias Senthil Kumar, residing in a ground floor house with his brother Srinivasan at Babu Rajendra Prasad Street, West Jaffarkhanpet in MGR Nagar police station limits. Senthil operates a passenger van in the area with his brother.

Police said the blast occurred when Srinivasan's wife and brother were away. On Tuesday, he woke up at 4.30 a.m. and tried to turn on the stove when the LPG cylinder reportedly exploded causing severe burns. Senthil was rushed to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.

Windows damaged

The glass windowpanes in many of the houses in the same block were damaged in the blast. Police said that in the accident, an 11-year-old boy Dinesh was injured when a glass shard hit him. He was treated as an outpatient in the hospital. On hearing of the blast, bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS) members rushed to the spot and conducted enquiries.

A police release said the explosion was due to leakage in the LPG cylinder. MGR Nagar police are investigating.
