HYDERABAD: The State Government has given a green signal for mortgaging the world-class sports infrastructure in the city to a nationalised bank for raising a loan of Rs. 60 crores, its financial commitment for the conduct of World Military Games in October. With the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) facing a severe cash crunch, the conduct of military games has become questionable and the proposal for mortgage has been cleared. The cash-strapped SAAP is now at a loss with regard to disbursing cash incentives to National Games medallists, which will work out to Rs 1.96 crores.
Constructions
Earlier, the Government had committed itself to spending Rs. 60 crores for conduct of the World Military Games, which includes construction of a Games village to accommodate 2,000 athletes. The Government has now decided to scale down the structures to 12 floors and not 16 in the Games village, as planned earlier. Prof. P. Chinnappa Reddy, technical advisor to the Government (Sports), wondered whether even the fourth quarter of Rs.4 crores of last financial year would be released or not, leave alone a hike in sports budget this year.
