BANGALORE: Segregation of garbage at source and awareness programmes to popularise segregation, a proactive Government policy for effective solid waste management and priority for generating energy from waste. These were some of the key issues that were discussed at a workshop on "Raising environmental awareness of Indian cities/municipalities" held in the city on Tuesday.
Sharing experiences
Organised by the European Commission under the Asia Pro Eco Program, the workshop provided a platform for representatives from various municipalities and non-governmental organisations to share their experiences. While most of the participants felt that the municipal corporations, primarily responsible for solid waste management, have done nothing to popularise segregation of waste at source, some others felt that financial constraints and inadequate infrastructure facilities resulted in poor solid waste management. Stressing that there is a need to look into customised non-conventional solutions for solid waste management, R. Nagendran from Anna University said all stakeholders responsible for this should compulsorily adopt best practices and modern technological options. Managing Director of Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation Jawaid Akhtar said industrial growth and economic development had also increased the quantity of municipal solid waste.
