Staff Reporter
Bangalore: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and its sister undertakings, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), North Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) and the Northwestern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) have requested the Government to sanction funds to the tune of Rs. 200 crore to take up infrastructure development works and upgradation of facilities. At a seminar organised to discuss the achievements of and challenges before the four State-owned Road Transport Corporations (SRTCs) here on Tuesday, officials of corporations urged the Government to not only provide funds to take up various development works but also to revise the taxes levied on purchase of vehicles. Responding to the demands made by the SRTCs, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who inaugurated the seminar, assured that the Government would look into the demands and give assistance in whichever way it can. In a seven-point memorandum to the State Government, the four SRTCs have demanded that the Government take up steps such as rationalisation of humps, construction of subways, passovers, skywalks, pedestrian crossing, barricades to discipline traffic, dedicated bus corridors, bus paths, cycle paths and green paths for optimised functioning of the road transport system.
Low-floor buses
The KSRTC has introduced 70 "Vajra" low floor buses for the convenience of commuters and the Government had released Rs. 53 crores for this purpose. The memorandum has appealed that an additional Rs.700 crore be sanctioned to the SRTCs to introduce 1000 such buses in the next few years. Under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, KSRTC has given a proposal to the Union Government for infrastructure development including rapid transit for buses on ring roads, modernisation of grid roads, and construction of buildings and depots at focal points at a cost of Rs.3,000 crore.
