BANGALORE: All business establishments in Yelahanka remained closed on Tuesday in response to the Yelahanka bandh call given by the Forum for Citizens' Rights to oppose the setting up of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike's zonal office at Byatarayanapura and the proposed move to rename the Yelahanka Assembly constituency as Byatarayanapura. Though the bandh brought business activities to a halt, vehicle traffic was normal in Yelahanka, Yelahanka New Town and the adjoining Bellary Road and Doddaballapur Road. Some private schools in Yelahanka had declared a holiday.
No untoward incidents
The bandh passed off peacefully and no untoward incidents were reported, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Malini Krishnamurthy told The Hindu . The police had stepped up security in Yelahanka by deploying additional forces. Hundreds of people took out a procession, which culminated in a public meeting. The forum had urged the authorities to setup the BBMP's zonal office in Yelahanka instead of Byatarayanapura. Yelahanka is the hometown of Bangalore's founder Kempe Gowda and it has many industries, public sector undertakings, educational institutions, bus depots and a railway station. On the other, Byatarayanapura is relatively a small town, the forum said while making out a case for setting up the BBMP's zonal office in Yelahanka. The forum has also planned to stage a relay hunger strike on February 21, rasta roko on February 22, rail roko on February 23, a torchlight procession on February 24 and a vehicle rally on February 25.
