In response to the Public Eye feature on water conservation (February 14, 2007), Monish Isaiah Mathiaas, programmer analyst with a software company, points out that apartments complexes with over 300 flats are constructed on land where you could ideally have only 10 to 15 independent houses.

Calculate the amount of groundwater apartments draw from a small block of land: it adds a stress on the water table. This is where rainwater harvesting plays a major role.

Simple things matter a ot. Water let out while doing a shave and brushing teeth contributes to wastage of 15 to 20 litres. A lot of water which we usually throw down the drain from cooking and so on can be used for watering the plants.

With reference earlier Public Eye feature on fuel conservation (January 31, 2006) he says, every vehicle running on fuel and emitting smoke raises the overall temperature of the earth. We know Bangalore is getting hotter and lakhs of litres (3.22 lakh litres/day to be precise) of petrol is being wasted every day at signals. Carpooling ensures that four people reach their destination using the same amount of fuel as single-man driven car.

Imagine a day without clean water at your disposal, being forced to wear medical/ filter mask because of air pollution, imagine having to cook on wood due to energy shortage.

It has been estimated that good housekeeping measures, use of more efficient equipment, and better control methods can save 35 to 40 per cent electricity in the domestic sector.
