`We don't mind paying... '

Chitra V. Ramani

Bangalore: "What if I am being charged extra? I am not complaining," said Gaurav Singhal, student at PES Institute of Technology, when asked if he minded paying more for soft drinks and snacks at a multiplex in the city.

Asked if he knew that a department looked into the pricing aspects and made sure that the customers' interests were protected, he said: "It is a government department. We all know how these departments work."

Like Singhal, Aijaz Ahmed, a businessman, also said he did not mind paying extra at multiplexes because he was paying for the entire experience.

"A lot of effort has gone into making sure that the soft drink is chilled at the right temperature. The short eats are warm and fresh. We should not complain about paying extra."

The multiplexes that dot the city sell soft drinks and short eats at inflated rates.

Small cinemas are also guilty of upping the prices of snacks, but not in such princely proportions. Prantik Sengupta, a first year B.Com student at Seshadripuram College, said he felt bad paying extra.

"A bottle of water is sold at a higher rate just because somebody remembered to keep it in the refrigerator! When we are out watching a movie, it is natural to have something to munch. Since we are not allowed to carry food items, we have to but those that are sold at inflated prices in the theatres," he grumbled.

Deepthy Shekhar, a theatreperson, said that she always carries water and some munchies with her when she goes out to watch a movie.

"I have been made fun of because of this habit of mine. But I do not care. I do not want to be a fool and pay extra."
