State urged to stop closure of industries

Pollution Control Board issues closure notices to 60 industries

HYDERABAD: The Mallapur Industrial Units Welfare Association on Tuesday urged the State Government to immediately stop closure of industries in Mallapur and Nacharam on charges of dumping chemical effluents.

Association president A. Bhasker Reddy told reporters that the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) had established the Mallapur Industrial Estate in 1980 and developed general and chemical industrial zones.

After the Pollution Control Board had issued closure orders to eight industries five years ago stating that pollution control measures were ignored, industrialists had started initiating various measures.

But the Board has issued closure notices to 60 industries on Tuesday after a person from nearby Hema Nagar filed Public Interest Litigation in the High Court.

Despite taking all necessary steps with a cost of Rs.70 lakhs, the Board had served notice on the management of Reiwance Engineering, he explained.

"Officials can take stern action if any industrialist violate norms, but please don't harass us without any reason," Mr. Rao said.

He requested the Government to allocate land for setting up common effluent treatment plant for the benefit of 200 small-scale industries, including 60 chemical units.
