RTA recruitment drive for improving services

Staff Reporter

32 existing vacancies in city to be filled

HYDERABAD: Shortage of manpower in the city-wing of Regional Transport Authority is severely hampering the slew of services being offered by the department, a fact even the top RTA officials readily accept.

Despite the Government's decision to strengthen the RTA office in city by filling up 32 existing vacancies, officials say the number would not suffice to improve the RTA services, as the actual requirement was pegged at nearly 125 personnel in various categories.

After almost 13 years, the State Government has approved to recruit Vehicle Inspectors, Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspectors, Administration Officers and Transport Constables recently. However, the yawning gap between the demand and supply remains.

"We are expecting the Government Orders to recruit 370 additional personnel all over the State within a week of which 32 posts would be sanctioned for Hyderabad but still there is a dearth of 125 Vehicle Inspectors in the city," said Joint Transport Commissioner B. Venkateswarlu.

On an average, one-lakh vehicles are registered in twin cities annually and keeping a tab on this mammoth figure is an immense task. As a result of the paucity in manpower, the city traffic police and RTA are perennially engaged in a blame game over lack of regulation.

For better functioning and offering quality service to public, RTA requires a technical wing to check the physical standards of vehicles, enforcement wing for implementing the road safety rules and front office personnel for issuing driving licences and renewals.

Everyday nearly 1,000 transactions pertaining to issuing of driving licences and renewals are attended to in each of the zonal office of RTA in the twin cities. The quality of service for these transactions has come down due to lack of manpower, admits Venkateswarlu.

While, the grades of Vehicle Inspectors and assistants would be filled by Service Commission, the district administration would recruit the clerical staff and the Transport Department would rope in transport constables.
