`Conmen' arrested
Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD:
Two alleged conmen, who used to trick lonely housewives to part with their jewellery by offering special prayers for their well-being, were arrested by Bowenpally police on Tuesday.
The arrested persons, M. Ravi and his brother-in-law S. Gouri, living in huts at Kompally used to approach middle-class housewives when the latter were alone. "Naturally, every family will have some problem. The duo would lead the innocent women that all such difficulties could be driven away by offering special prayers," Bowenpally Sub-Inspector Mathew Koshy said.
They would ask the victims to take out jewellery and keep it in a box they carry along. The tricksters would apply `kumkum' and act off as if they were offering prayers by closing their eyes. Then, they ask the women to take bath and replace the steel box containing jewellery with an empty one they have.
They used to warn not to open the boxes for next four or five hours and disappear with the jewellery box they hid in their clothes.
