Certain assigned lands to be regularised

Special Correspondent

Individuals, charitable institutions to be benefited

HYDERABAD: The State Government has decided to regularise the occupation of assigned lands in the notified urban areas in all cases of individuals who have constructed buildings for dwelling purpose.

Industries, charitable institutions and educational institutions in the notified urban agglomerations will also receive this benefit. Assigned lands in the rural areas occupied by others will not, however, be regularised. They will be taken over and re-allotted to original assignees.

This decision was taken by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy at a meeting here on Tuesday with Revenue Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao, Chief Secretary J. Hari Narayan and senior officials. The Minister told reporters later this was decided on the basis of numerous representations received from political parties, organisations and individuals.

He said draft guidelines for regularising the assigned lands within the ambit of the AP Assigned Lands (Prohibition of Transfers Act) of 1977 had been prepared by a committee headed by the Chief Secretary. The legal implications of the proposed guidelines would be examined and finalised after consultations with the Advocate-General on Saturday. Answering a question, the Minister said it was too early to assume that the benefit of regularisation would be extended only to the poor.

He said the amendments to the Act recently provided for takeover of assigned lands for allotment to the original assignees or their legal heirs. It also stipulated that if none of them was traced, the lands would be taken over and used for any "public purpose".
