Anchuthengu: Minister promises speedy relief

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Fisheries Minister S. Sarma on Tuesday directed officials in his department to provide fishing equipment to the fisherfolk who lost their nets and boats in the fire that swept through their colony at Anchuthengu on Saturday.

Addressing mediapersons after a visit to the colony, he asked the officials to supply the fishing gear within 10 days. Equipment to the tune of Rs.18.78 lakh had been destroyed in the blaze according to initial estimates, Mr. Sarma said.

The Government was committed to providing houses to those who were rendered homeless by the fire, including those without title deeds. A special rehabilitation zone would be earmarked for the affected families, he said.

Mr. Sarma said the Cabinet meeting on Thursday would finalise the financial package for the rehabilitation of the families. The Government would identify the land required for the project, he said. District Collector N. Ayyappan was asked to do the needful.

Anathalavattam Anandan, MLA, was present.

Earlier in the day, Communist Party of India(Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan visited the colony and the relief camps where the stricken families had been accommodated.
