High Court denies bail to ACP

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday refused to grant anticipatory bail to suspended Assistant Commissioner of Police Rakesh Bansal in a bribery case.

Rejecting the plea, Justice Ravindra Bhatt said investigations into the allegations against him were in the preliminary stages. He directed the suspended officer to cooperate with the Central Bureau of Investigation that is investigating the charges against him.

Bansal has been on the run since February 1 when a special court for CBI cases here issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against him.

The CBI has alleged that he had accepted a bribe of Rs. 1.5 lakhs through Sub-Inspector Jagdish from a diamond merchant here by threatening to implicate him in a case if he did not meet his demand for a bribe of Rs. 5 lakhs. Bansal's involvement in the "extortion racket" was revealed following the arrest of the S-I while demanding and accepting money from the merchant.
