KATHMANDU: Nepal's interim Parliament has passed a motion seeking action against King Gyanendra's Democracy Day message in which he had defended his February 1, 2005 coup. The motion was tabled by Nepali Congress general secretary Ram Chandra Poudel along with 10 other lawmakers. The lawmakers said the king's February 19 message was "unconstitutional, unauthorised and undemocratic. Since the message was against the spirit of the April movement the Government should take necessary action against it and inform Parliament about it." The motion did not specify the type of action. But lawmakers from all major parties including NC and NC (D), which are considered soft towards monarchy said monarchy was an obstacle to democracy and should be abolished. Many lawmakers demanded that the interim Parliament itself should declare Nepal as republic.
