NEW DELHI: Greenpeace India has urged asked the Government to ban incandescent light bulbs and advocate use of energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps. Australia is the first country to ban incandescent bulbs. Greenpeace India said that by banning incandescent light bulbs, India could save up to 12,000 MW, which is equivalent to almost 4 per cent of its carbon dioxide emissions. Soumyabrata Rahut, energy expert with Greenpeace India, in a statement issued here on Wednesday, said: "If we are unable to keep a temperature rise below 2 degrees centigrade, India will face devastating impacts of climate change; this will not only reduce its agricultural yields by 20 per cent but also affect its Gross Domestic Product by 9 to 11 per cent. The Government of India is not in a position to wait for other countries to resolve the problem." Mr. Rahut said: "The Government should take a responsible step towards fighting climate change by cutting the use of hazardous and inefficient technology. Banning the bulb is an easily implementable initiative that will address this problem along with the issue of chronic energy shortage. It will positively impact India's economic development and create a win-win situation for the country."
