NSS officer gets award

The National Service Scheme Unit 13 of Sadakkathullah Appa College, Palayamkottai, which was adjudged the `Best Unit in Tirunelveli District' in 2003 - 04, has got an award again for its officer in-charge. The NSS of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University honours the best units of affiliated colleges in Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Tuticorin districts and the officers in-charge every year. Vice-Chancellor Cynthia Pandian gave away the award to the NSS Officer of Unit 13 of SAC, Nazir Ahmed.

A seminar on preaching of Buddha was organised recently at Thiruvalluvar College, Papanasam, in association with the Centre for Buddha Studies, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. College Principal V. Sankarasubramoniam presided and director of Centre for Buddha Studies N. Kannan delivered the introductory address.

Monk Neelavathi spoke on teachings of Buddha and the role of students in maintaining peace.

A quiz programme was conducted at PET Engineering College, Valliyoor, by the Renewable Energy Club to create awareness among the students of different forms of renewable energy. Fourteen students from different branches participated. Winners were given cash awards of Rs. 500, Rs. 375 and Rs. 250. The college also organised a vaccination camp for Hepatitis B. As many as 340 students and 20 staff members were given the vaccine.

Sri K.G.S. Arts College organised a `Cultural panorama' programme on its premises at Srivaikundam recently to explain the civilizations of the country.

A heritage club was opened to create awareness among the students of the need to preserve ancient monuments. A tourism manuscript prepared by the students was also released.

The National Cadet Corps' Annual Day was celebrated recently at the National Engineering College, Kovilpatti.

The chief guest, K.C. Mahali, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Tirunelveli range), called upon the cadets to maintain high levels of discipline to succeed in their lives.

"Good character will give you courage to face challenges," he said.

Quoting Swami Vivekananda, Mr Mahali said, "We should respect our ancestors and remember their services to the nation."

A meeting of parent-teachers' association was held on the college premises recently.

About 400 parents and 150 staff participated.

A language seminar organised by the English Literary Association at the S.S. Duraisamy Nadar Mariammal College, Kovilpatti, was held recently.

Resources persons from various institutions delivered lectures on the importance of English in daily life. A literary quiz was also conducted.

Graduation day was celebrated at St. Mary's College, Tuticorin, recently.

James Reynold Daniel, Principal of Scott Christian College, Nagercoil, delivered the convocation address and distributed degree certificates to the students who completed the undergraduate courses.
