Rural areas get access to higher education

Colleges started in remote rural areas help the eligible youths have an access to higher education, said the Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, C. Thangamuthu.

Delivering the convocation address at Arputha College of Arts and Science at Arputha Nagar near Vamban in Alankudi taluk of Pudukottai district recently, Mr. Thangamuthu said that hardly seven per cent of the eligible youths in the age group of 17-22 years continued their higher education.

Mr. Thangamuthu urged the students to shun their inhibitions and focus their attention on personality development.

The Founder-Chairman of the college, Rev. Fr. G. Arul Irudayam, spoke on the role of the youths for the overall development of the country.

The Secretary of the college, Rev. Fr. S. Antonysamy, and the Principal, R. Savarimuthu, spoke.

A consumer awareness programme, cleaning of the temple, free eye camp formed part of a special camp organised at three villages by the National Service Scheme unit of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College of Arts and Science for Women at Perambalur recently.

Students from various departments co-ordinated the programme at Chathiramanai, Kalarampatti and Mangoon.

Students of the Chemistry Department rightly chose to conduct the consumer awareness programme by demonstrating some adulterated food and its adverse impact on health.

During the free eye camp, S. Bernard Albert, an eye specialist from St. Joseph Eye Hospital, Tiruchi, screened the villagers. About 30 persons were selected for free surgery.

The NSS Co-ordinator, Bharathidasan Univeirsity, K. Kanagaraju, who inaugurated the camp, said the NSS camps inculcated an orientation for selfless service among the volunteers.

The Principal, R. M. Meenakshi, and the Founder-Chairman of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Educational Institutions, A. Srinivasan, spoke.

Students of Thanthai Hans Roever College in Perambalur had a rare opportunity recently, when a daylong seminar on `Wireless and mobile technology' was organised under the auspices of the Department of Computer Applications.

The Reader in Computer Science, St. Joseph's College, Tiruchi, S. Albert Rabara, who was the resource person, said that information technology together with telecommunication and broadcasting had brought dramatic changes in several areas, including communication, business and learning.

He explained the advantages of wireless technology especially during crisis such as tsunami. Apart from being cost-effective, it was also fast with a wide range of applications. Some of its applications included FM and AM radios, e-learning, vehicle and asset tracking system such as RFIDs, chip-based sensors.

Mr. Rabara also emphasised the need for increasing the connectivity to villages, taking into consideration that a majority of our country was rural areas.

The Principal, R. Valluvan, presided over the seminar. The Dean, Computer Science Applications and Information Technology, G. Ravi, spoke on local area network and wide area network.

Computer Science Association of Naina Mohamed College at Rajendrapuram in Pudukottai district hosted a seminar on `recent trends in information technology'. The correspondent, N. Mohamed Farook, inaugurated it with the Principal, K. Rowther Naina Mohamed, in the chair. N.A. Shahul Hameed, Head, Department of Computer Science, Khadir Mohideen College, Adhirampattinam, was the resource person. He explained the importance of web design, software engineering, multi-media, networking and DBA. He also provided tips on interviews and the recent development in the conduct of interview. The Head, Department of Computer Science of the college, R. Manimaran, also spoke.
