Centre directed to decide on airing `racist' ads

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the Centre to take a decision on the beaming of advertisements with alleged racist overtones by Nimbus Communications Limited, owner of Neo Sports, during the telecast of the recent India-West Indies and India-Sri Lanka one-day cricket series here.

A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice M. K. Sharma and Justice Sanjiv Khanna passed the direction on public interest litigation seeking a stay on the beaming of the advertisements and damages against the Centre and the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) for not taking any steps to stop its telecast.

The Bench also refused to entertain a request by counsel for Nimbus Communications for modifications in the order.

He submitted that the advertisements were for the sake of fun, not aimed at hurting anyone's sentiments.

"The telecaster should have come with an affidavit stating that it would not show such advertisements in future," the Bench observed.

Counsel for the Union Government submitted that it had issued a notice to Nimbus Communications on February 14 seeking its reply on the telecast of the advertisements.
