ACP surrenders

NEW DELHI: Assistant Commissioner of Police Rakesh Bansal, who was evading arrest in a bribery case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation, surrendered in a city court here on Wednesday.

The accused, posted with the Anti-Extortion and Robbery Cell of the Delhi Police Crime Branch, surrendered in the evening in the court of Additional Sessions Judge I. K. Kochhar who remanded him to four-day CBI custody.

ACP Bansal's surrender came after the Delhi High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea on Tuesday. He had applied for anticipatory bail contending that the complainant in the case had a criminal background. The court had rejected his plea.

The CBI on January 31 had arrested Sub-Inspector Jagdish, posted with the Crime Branch, while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 1.5 lakh from the complainant.

Two auto-thieves held

NEW DELHI: Two young men allegedly involved in five cases of auto-theft have been arrested at Rohini here.

Acting on a tip-off, the police laid a trap near M2K Cine Complex and the accused, Mukesh (28) and Sandeep (27), were arrested on Tuesday. The Indica car in which they were travelling was allegedly stolen from Hardwar. The police claimed to have recovered four more stolen cars from them.

During interrogation, Mukesh purportedly disclosed that he became an auto-thief after a financier cheated him and took away his tempo.

Bomb hoax

NEW DELHI: A man identifying himself as "spokesperson of Jaish-e-Mohammad" called up the Police Control Room here on Wednesday and threatened to carry out blasts in the Capital. The call made from a stolen mobile phone later turned out to be a hoax. A hunt has been launched for the caller.

Fire at Sena Bhavan

NEW DELHI: A minor fire broke out at Sena Bhavan here on Wednesday.

According to the police, waste material lying in the dustbin caught fire when someone threw a lighted cigarette butt inside it. The blaze was put out even before the fire tenders reached the spot.
