dated February 23, 1957: Jarring mission

The UN Security Council on February 21 voted to send its President, Mr. Gunnar Jarring of Sweden, to India and Pakistan to examine with the Governments of the two countries any proposals, which, in his opinion, would help in the settlement of the Kashmir problem, having regard to the previous resolutions of the Security Council and of the UN Commission for India and Pakistan. The vote, on a three-Power resolution in the 11-nation body proposing the Jarring mission, was ten in favour, none against, with the Soviet Union abstaining.
