This Day That Age
The first furnished coach built at the Integral Coach Factory, Perambur, was launched by Mr. A.J. John, Governor of Madras, on February 21. The coach, which will carry third class passengers, has been divided into two halves with one row of single seats on one side and transverse long seats to accommodate four passengers each on the other side, with a passage in between. Welcoming the Governor, Mr. K. Satagopan, Chief Administrative Officer, said the factory was now well on its way to reach its target outturn a year earlier than programmed. When originally planned, it was intended to produce coach body shells only. It was felt there would be capacity available in railway workshops to furnish these shells. Subsequently, it was found not possible to spare the workshops for furnishing the shells. Also it was logically the most economical proposition to have one factory manufacturing the complete coach. The Government, therefore, had now sanctioned a furnishing annexe to make the factory a complete coach manufacturing unit.
