Congress rally dispersed

Manas Dasgupta

GANDHINAGAR: Police resorted to lathi-charge and used water-jets to disperse a Congress rally which marched from Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad to the State Assembly building here to highlight the "failures" of the Narendra Modi government in Gujarat on "all fronts," particularly in maintaining law and order and protecting women against atrocities.

At least three Congress workers sustained serious injuries. More than 300 Congress workers and leaders, including state party president Bharat Solanki, All-India Congress Committee secretary Irshad Mirza, Pradesh Congress spokesman Shaktisinh Gohil, and Alkaben Kshatriya and Tushar Chaudhary both members of Parliament, courted arrest and were released later.

Leader of the opposition in the State Assembly Arjun Modhvadia, and some of the party MLAs also courted arrest but were released to allow them to attend the House, which began its budget session here on Thursday.
