Anand overwhelms Morozevich

  • Anand emerges as the sole leader
  • Carlsen upstages Ivanchuk

NEW DELHI: Viswanathan Anand produced an aggressive display against Alexander Morozevich and broke the Russian's resistance in 59 moves to emerge as the sole leader after four rounds of the Morelia-Linares Super Grandmasters chess tournament in Morelia, Mexico, on Wednesday.

Anand's second straight victory in the eight-player field raised his tally to three points and kept him half a point ahead of Magnus Carlsen, the youngest contender in the field. Carlsen upstaged Ukraine's Vassily Ivanchuk in 60 moves. Anand, playing white, called the shots in the Ruy Lopez game. Anand's sustained aggression forced Morozevich to surrender a pawn in the centre on the 43rd move. Two moves later, Anand collected a queenside pawn. With two extra pawns on the queenside, Anand exchanged the rooks to reach an extremely favourable minor-piece ending.

The results (Fourth round): Viswanathan Anand (Ind, 3) bt Alexander Morozevich (Rus, 1); Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 2) lost to Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 2.5); Veselin Topalov (Bul, 1.5) drew with Peter Svidler (Rus, 2); Peter Leko (Hun, 2) drew with Levon Aronian (Arm, 2).

Fifth round pairings: Aronian - Anand; Carslen - Topalov; Svidler - Leko; Morozevich - Ivanchuk.
