Special Correspondent

"Several schemes available for protecting the farm sector"

Puducherry: Industries and Agriculture Minister V. Vaithilingam has called upon farmers to retain their farmlands and stick to their occupation.

Declaring open the 21st "uzhavar udhaviyagam" (a multi-sector centre for rendering information and guidance to farmers) at Tirukanchi in the Villianoor block near here on Wednesday, Mr. Vaithilingam said it was true that agriculture was becoming a challenging occupation, what with various odds facing the farmers.

Therefore, the Government had drawn up several schemes for protecting the farm sector, augmenting production and promoting the farmers' well-being, he added.

J. Narayanasamy, Villianoor MLA, presided over the function.

Chairman of the Villianoor commune panchayat K. Natarjan, Director of Agriculture R. Sathiaseelan and a host of officials and farmers' representatives spoke.
