Rangasamy happy with Annual Plan allocation

Lays cornerstone for Rs. 4.75-crore bed-dam

Puducherry: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said that he was happy with the Annual Plan allocation of Rs.1,455 crore made by the Planning Commission to the Union Territory. The allocation would comprise Rs.154-crore grant from the Centre, Rs.247 crore loan from Housing and Urban Development Corporation, Rs.185 crore raised under the Central Sales Tax, Rs.240 crore funds for the tsunami rehabilitation, Rs.271-crore through additional resource mobilisation and Rs.357.52 crore raised through small savings and market borrowings. He said that the allocation was marked by an increase of Rs.45 crore over the previous year's allocation.

Talking to newsmen at Sellipet in Thirubuvanai after laying the cornerstone for Rs. 4.75-crore bridge-cum-bed-dam across Pambaiyar on Thursday, The Chief Minister said that Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia had appreciated "the good work" of the the administration in development sector, implementation of welfare programmes and enforcement of schemes to recharge sub-soil water. He had also apprised the Deputy Chairman of the advantages of the bed-dams across riverbeds.

He said that such dams would raise water table. The bridge cum bed-dam that would be constructed across the Pambaiyar would help more than 10 villages get drinking water supply and irrigation facilities and it would also check the ingress of sea or brackish water into the water table. Each dam will cost Rs.3 crore. Eight such dams had been constructed and 10 more were in the pipeline. Six mini-lakes, each spread across three acres, would be raised in Karaikal at a cost of Rs.10 crore each. Later, he laid the cornerstone for a Rs.3.5-crore bed-dam across the Malataru in Karikalambam block. Legislators R Rajaraman and P Angalane were present. Chief Engineer of Public Works Department R. Pituchumani, Superintending Engineer S. Manohar and Executive Engineer V. Sathiamoorthy also participated.
