Meetings planned with depositors

CHENNAI: The Economic Offences Wing will hold meetings with depositors of finance companies that went bust a few years ago, to inform them about the status of cases and action taken.

According to a press release here, a meeting of depositors of Alwarpet Benefit Fund will be held on February 27. The personnel will meet depositors of the Anubhav Group of companies on March 1, Devi Gold House the next day and RBF on March 7.

The meeting will be held at the Crime Branch office at Admiralty House, Government Estate (near MLA hostel). Depositors who had lodged a complaint have been requested to attend the meeting. Archana Ramasundaram, ADGP; Vijay Kumar, IG, EOW-2 and M. Sathiyapriya, SP will explain the progress of the cases.

The EOW was formed in 1999 following an order of the Madras High Court to investigate mega scams in financial companies. In all, 1,218 cases have been registered and the amount defrauded was Rs.1850 crore.

BJP questions PMK's credentials

CHENNAI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday questioned the credentials of the Pattali Makkal Katchi in criticising the entry of big players into retail trade.

G. Kumaravelu, vice-president of the State unit, said it was the decision of the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre that enabled big players to enter retail trade.

"When the PMK is a party to the decision, how can it oppose the move now? Will the PMK come out of the alliance on this issue if its demand is not met?" he asked. — Special Correspondent

Lottery tickets seized, 259 held

CHENNAI: The police have seized nearly 29,000 lottery tickets during a State-wide raid.

Sale of lottery tickets is banned in Tamil Nadu. Following information that lottery tickets of other States were being sold, the police launched a search in all districts.

As many as 259 persons, who were selling lottery tickets of other States, were arrested and 29,670 tickets and Rs.12,788 in sale proceeds seized, Director-General of Police D. Mukherjee said in a press release.

Stringent action would be taken against the arrested persons and also those who assisted them, he said. — Special Correspondent

Free vocational training programme

CHENNAI: The Indian Institute of Leather Products (IILP) will conduct a free vocational training programme in leather products for backward class/most backward class candidates under the sponsorship of Tamil Nadu Government, which will bear the course fee.

Candidates will be selected through walk-in interview on February 26 (Monday) at 10 am at IILP, 163 Thiruneermalai Road, Parvathipuram, Chromepet, Chennai -4. The candidates must bring originals of marksheet, transfer certificate, community certificate and income certificate.

The course is open to both men and women in the age group of 15 to 32, according to an Institute press release. — Special Correspondent

ERODE: The agricultural grievances meeting scheduled to be conducted on February 23 at 10.30 a.m. in the collectorate has been postponed, according to a release from S. Somasundaram, PA to Collector, Agriculture, on Wednesday.

Arrested in double murder case

Erode: A police team on Tuesday arrested Manickkam (21), a cook in a hotel here, on charges of murdering a woman and her son. According to Sonal V. Misra, Superintendent of Police, Vijaya (25), a widow, and her son Kadhiravan (4) were found murdered in their house near Bhavani on Monday. The police took Manickkam into custody. On interrogation he told the police that he had an affair with Vijaya. On Sunday she demanded money and threatened to reveal their affair to his wife if he did not give her the money. Manickkam stabbed her and her son, who tried to raise alarm, to death. The police seized the knife used for the crime. - Staff Reporter

Unemployment dole

Udhagamandalam: Under the Assistance for the Educated Unemployed scheme applications have been invited by the District Employment Office here. In a press note issued here the District Employment Officer P. Dhanabalam said that the applicants should have registered their names five years ago and renewed their registration without a break. They should be below 40 (SCs and STs below 45). The annual income of their family should be below Rs. 24,000. They should have been educated only in Tamil Nadu. - Special Correspondent

Udhagamandalam: A one-day workshop for school teachers on Principles and Practices of Effective English Language Teaching will be conducted by the Providence College for Women at Coonoor on February 26 between 9.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. According to the Principal Anthumary, the facilitator would be Robert Bellarmine, an ex-faculty of the British Council. - Special Correspondent

Life imprisonment

Udhagamandalam: The District Judge N. Authinathan on Thursday sentenced Arivazhagan, a carpenter of Vedan Vayal near Gudalur to life imprisonment for murdering his younger brother. According to the prosecution, there had been a property dispute between Arivazhagan and his brothers including Rajagopal.

During August 2004 following an argument in their house, Arivazhagan had stabbed Rajagopal with a chisel. He died on the spot. The Gudalur police arrested Arivazhagan. - Special Correspondent

Grievance day on February 27

KARUR: The farmers' grievance day meeting for this month will be conducted at the Revenue Divisional Officer's Office, Kulithalai, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, according to a press release issued here by Collector T.N. Venkatesh. The Collector has called upon the farmers to submit petitions relating only to agriculture.

Motorist killed

TIRUCHI: Selvam (37) was killed in a road accident on the Tiruchi - Karur National Highway at Kambarasampettai near here on Tuesday.

According to police sources, Selvam was riding a motorcycle towards Musiri when a lorry carrying blue metal collided head on with his vehicle.

Selvam who was injured the collision, succumbed to his injuries at the Government Hospital here.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 82.01 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday.

The inflow was 231 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 1,500 cusecs.

Former Minister appears in court

RAMANATHAPURAM: Former AIADMK Minister V.T. Natarajan appeared before the first Judicial Magistrate Sai Saravanan in connection with an attempt to murder case.

Sources said cadres of the AIADMK and the DMK clashed with each other during the local body election at Manakudi near here recently. Cases were registered against Natarajan and 25 others in this connection. Though they had obtained anticipatory bail in the case, they appeared before the court as per a direction.

Two held on

cheating charge

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Bazaar police arrested two persons on the charge of cheating on Thursday.

Sources said Thamim Ansari (37) of Tiruchi allegedly received Rs.1.78 lakh from one Sukumaran of Sikil Raja Street here for appointing the latter as a dealer for his company. However, Mr. Ansari reportedly failed to comply with the terms and conditions. Based on Sukumaran's complaint, Thamim Ansari and his company manager Maharajan were arrested.

Water level

MADURAI: Water level in the Periyar dam stood at 111.90 feet (136 feet) with no inflow and a discharge of 175 cusecs.

The level in the Vaigai dam was 28.41 feet (71 feet) with no inflow and a discharge of 41 cusecs.

The combined Periyar credit stood at 1,173 mcft. — Staff Reporter

Held for selling lottery tickets

Tuticorin: The police have arrested seven persons from different parts of the district on Wednesday while they allegedly tried to sell lottery tickets.

A total of 421 tickets were seized from them.

While Dharmaraj (36) and T. Vellaipandi (51) were arrested from Sawyerpuram, Shanmugavel and Veerasamy (56) were arrested from Vilathikulam.

Natarajan (35) was arrested at Ettayapuram and Sankaralingam (52) and Ganesha Moorthy (34) were arrested in the town.

Rs.5.35 crore to renovate tanks

Nagercoil: The Government has allotted the sum of Rs. 5.35 crore to renovate feeder channels and tank systems of Poigai dams, the Collector, S. Swarna, has said.

Land acquisition work for the establishment of a fishing harbour at Thengapattinam in Kanyakumari district was going on in full swing and it would be completed at the earliest, she added.

Rally flagged off

Nagercoil: The Collector, S. Swarna, flagged off an awareness rally on diabetes-induced eye diseases here on Wednesday.

It was organised by the Rotary Club of Nagercoil, the Scott Christian Collage and the Bejan Singh Hospital. - Staff Reporter
