Furore in A.P. House over searches on Margadarsi

Assembly adjourned without transacting any business

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Assembly was adjourned without transacting any business on Thursday after the Opposition raised a furore over the searches conducted by CID of police on Margadarsi Financiers.

This followed the action of the Opposition members in staging a dharna in the well of the House to press for discussion on their adjournment motion on Margadarsi. As TDP members seemed determined to stall regular business, Speaker K. R. Suresh Reddy adjourned the House for the day. Later, a delegation of TDP MPs and MLAs led by N. Chandrababu Naidu went to Raj Bhavan and urged Governor Rameshwar Thakur to restrain the Congress Government from attacking the Eenadu group and take "constitutionally appropriate" action against Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy. Asking him to invoke his powers as custodian of the Constitution, the TDP leaders accused the Chief Minister of acting in a dictatorial manner and adopting a strategy of weakening his opponents financially and encourage physical attacks against them.

The proceedings of the Assembly began on a noisy note when TDP members raised slogans against the Government for attacking press freedom after Speaker disallowed five adjournment motions on the Margadarsi issue by all the major parties. Suresh Reddy adjourned the House for about 90 minutes.

Slogan-shouting

When the House re-assembled, the Speaker said that it was agreed at the floor leaders' meeting to discuss the issue under rule 304 on Friday on the suggestion of N. Narasimhaiah (CPI-M). But, the TDP members did not relent and kept on raising slogans forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House for the day.

Later, slogan-shouting TDP members went in procession to the Telugu Desam Legislature Party (TDLP) office.
