NEW DELHI: Ten students of Jawaharlal Nehru University, including three students' union office-bearers, were suspended on Wednesday for allegedly gheraoing and illegally confining Registrar Avais Ahmad on the campus. "The students had gheraoed the Registrar in his car on Monday. They tied a rope around it and deflated the tyres. He was kept in illegal confinement for seven hours. They also said a lot of provocative things to Mr. Ahmad. We cannot allow this kind of violent behaviour on the JNU campus," said Vice-Chancellor B. B. Bhattacharya on Wednesday. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) along with some other students has been demanding minimum wages for construction labourers and sanitation workers employed on the campus. They were protesting over the same issue outside the Administration Block on Monday. "The workers of the electricity department of JNU were sacked by the authorities over a month ago since they have awarded a contract to some private firm. We have been demanding that they be reinstated. But the administration is not willing to talk on this. There are making an issue out of nothing and avoiding a discussion on the real problem," said JNUSU general secretary Sandeep Singh, who was also suspended. Dhananjay Tripathi and Jyotsna Singh, the JNUSU president and joint secretary respectively, have also been issued suspension letters. Prof. Bhattacharya said the University would soon initiate a proper inquiry against the students.
