THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet on Thursday decided to reconstitute the State Women's Commission with former High Court judge D. Sreedevi as chairperson. P.K. Sainaba, Meenakshi Thampan and T. Devi will be the members. Ms. Sainaba and Ms. Devi belong to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Ms. Thampan to the CPI. Ms. Sreedevi headed the Commission in 2001-02 and both Ms. Thampan and Ms. Devi were its members previously. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said after a Cabinet meeting that a member belonging to the Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes would be nominated later as the fifth member. The Chief Minister announced that the Industrial Training Institutes at Aryanad and Koyilandy would be upgraded as centres of excellence. In view of the crisis in the plantation sector, closed estates would be granted exemption from minimum demand charge for the period of closure so as to facilitate their reopening. Their dues would run into crores of rupees. Mr. Achuthanandan said he was not aware of the latest position regarding the negotiations for the Smart City project in Kochi. Both sides had agreed to send their proposals to each other.
