`Appropriate' action against YSR sought

HYDERABAD: Leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday appealed to Governor Rameshwar Thakur to restrain the Congress Government from attacking the Eenadu group and take `constitutionally appropriate' action against Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

Leading a group of TDP MPs and MLAs to Raj Bhavan soon after the Assembly adjourned, Mr. Naidu tried to impress upon the Governor that as custodian of the Constitution, he ought to seek information from the Government and initiate action against violation of any kind.

`Blackmailing tactics'

"The Chief Minister has been acting in a dictatorial manner and mounting a calculated attack on political opponents and the media. He is adopting blackmailing tactics against all those who do not fall in line. He wants to weaken them financially and encourage physical attacks against them. It does not bode well for democracy," he said.

The Governor heard him out and agreed with Mr. Naidu when the latter said it was for the RBI to protect the interest of depositors. The Government was proceeding against Margadarsi Financiers in a vindictive manner though no depositor had made any complaint to the RBI or the Government, Mr. Naidu.

The TDP chief said searches on Margadarsi offices were part of the Government's persecution policy to finish off its detractors and newspapers like Eenadu that have been consistently exposing corruption in administration and scandals in irrigation projects. "In a democracy, it is the right of the the media to write about the mistakes committed by the Government. If the newspaper is wrong, the Government can ask the Information Department to put out facts," he said and recalled as to how The Hindu had exposed corruption in Bofors deal.

TRS memorandum

Later, a TRS delegation led by K. Vijayarama Rao also submitted a memorandum to the Governor, saying that the Government's action smacked of vengeance.
