Anti-terror squad being set up in Bellary

Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: Inspector General of Police K.R. Srinivasan has said that the Government is giving top priority to the setting up of an anti-terrorist squad in the district and is in the process of identifying committed and willing personnel for it. He told presspersons here on Thursday that pending the establishment of the squad here, the existing anti-terrorist squad in Bangalore, which was looking after the entire State, was being geared up to meet any eventuality.

Mr. Srinivasan was here to participate in the second State-level "Kavi Sammelan" of police personnel organised by Karnataka State Police Sahitya Vedike in association with the Bellary district Police Department and the Department of Kannada and Culture.

"The Government plans to establish a full-fledged anti-terrorist squad. We have been identifying people who are willing and dedicated to serve the unit, and the details are being worked out with regard to extending attractive incentives and benefits, and imparting proper training to those who opt to join the squad," he said.

Mr. Srinivasan said that the proposals to set up new police stations, including in Hampi and other parts of the district, had been approved and the process would begin soon.

With regard to the need to strengthen the Police Department, he said that around 4,000 constables had been recruited, and the process of recruiting around 360 sub-inspectors had begun.
