CUTTACK: The High Court on Thursday adjourned the hearing of Orissa DGP B.B. Mahanti's writ petition seeking to quash the FIR filed against him at Lal Kothi police station in Rajasthan to February 27. Refusing to grant more time to the Rajasthan government to file the counter, the single judge bench of Justice A.S. Naidu asked the counsel appearing for the Rajasthan government to file the counter positively before February 27 and fixed the same date for the next hearing of the case. Mahanti, in a petition filed on February 12 urged the High Court to quash the FIR registered against him by Rajasthan police in connection with the parole jumping case of his son Bitihotra. The beleaguered IPS officer, currently working as Orissa DGP (home guards and fire services), has been insulated from arrest by the Rajasthan police till February 26 following an `interim protection' granted to him by another bench of the High Court in response to a separate anticipatory bail application moved by him. A local advocate P.K. Parhi, who is also representing the Rajasthan government in opposing the anticipatory bail application of Mahanti, filed the `vakalatnama' on behalf of V.S. Singh, the principal secretary (home) of Rajasthan government and sought at least two weeks time to file the counter in response to Mahanti's writ.
