BERHAMPUR: At a special meeting, the Berhampur municipal council agreed to implement recommendations of the fifth pay commission for its employees.

Following it, employees and sanitary workers of the municipality called off their agitation.

The municipal council also agreed to the other demand of employees regarding hike in the pay structure of temporary employees.

Daily wages of temporary workers from next financial year would be Rs. 70, Rs. 80 and Rs. 90 for unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled workers.

Talks fruitful

With these demands, employees and sanitary workers of the Berhampur municipality issued a 15-day notice to the municipality authorities on January 26. They launched indefinite strike jeopardising the sanitary work from February 7. However, the strike was suspended till February 22 after talks between authorities and leaders of the agitating employees on February 15.

According to a leader of the employees' union, Anil Kumar Nayak, they would hold an executive body meeting of the union to discuss the success of their strike.

Leaders of the employees' union and sanitary workers' union greeted officials and Municipal Chairperson Sulochana Swain with bouquets when the resolution to increase their salaries was accepted by the council at the meeting.

The employees were seen congratulating one another.

The employees, who were happy over the developments, promised all efforts to make Berhampur a clean and beautiful city.

At the meeting, the possible ways were discussed to increase the income of the municipality.

Councillors suggested several measures for development of the city and officials and Chairperson assured them of looking into their suggestions and take the necessary steps.
