Corporation staff seek arrest of MDMK functionary

TIRUNELVELI: The employees of Tirunelveli Corporation struck work on Thursday and urged the Police Commissioner, Ashok Kumar Das, to arrest a Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam functionary for allegedly threatening, Shanthi, Assistant Executive Engineer of Melapalayam Zone.

After Ms. Shanthi and a subordinate staff were reportedly threatened by the Tirunelveli City Secretary of MDMK, K.M.A. Nizam, on Tuesday evening, they filed separate cases with the Melapalayam Police. The Corporation employees also formed a 14-member struggle committee to protest against the incident. Demanding the immediate arrest of Mr. Nizam, representatives of the committee met the Police Commissioner on Thursday.

They said that the Corporation workers would report to duty on Friday wearing black badges, condemning the incident and work on Saturday and Sunday if Mr. Nizam was not arrested. The protestors would wear red badges from Monday and serve a strike notice on the 15th day if the stalemate continued.

The workers also staged a demonstration in front of their office at Tirunelveli.

Mr. Nizam, in a statement, said that he had gone to the office of Ms. Shanthi on February 20 "with regard to a Bill for road contract."

"When she was explaining the reasons for the delay, Muthu Durai, a staff picked up wordy duel with me and my son, Ahmed, in the presence of Ms. Ms. Shanthi. I informed the Mayor and the Commissioner about the incident and an enquiry was conducted. Ms. Shanthi was told to pass the Bill without further delay. Though I did not threaten or abuse anybody, a false case was foisted against me and my son," Mr. Nizam said.
