MADURAI:
Helmet sale has gone up by ten times in Madurai in the last few days.
Ever since the State Government announced that wearing of helmets would be compulsory for two-wheeler riders from June 1, exclusive showrooms or helmet corners in automobile shops have come up. Many unknown brands too have hit the city.
But, residents complain that the prices of helmets have gone up by Rs. 50 to Rs. 200.
"There is only a partial rise of up to Rs. 50 as we had to airdash them to meet the urgent demands," T.S. Sudarsanam, a trader, said.
"May be some new traders who procure them in local markets should be selling them at exorbitant rates to make profit," said another trader, K. Jayakumar.
However, R. Parameswaran, manager of a leading automobile spare parts dealer, said, "The price list of all the leading brands remain the same since 2006. It ranges from Rs. 330 to Rs. 465. The maximum price of a branded, ISI certified helmet is just Rs. 1,185, as of now," he added.
