Women's rights activists for budgetary allocation

NEW DELHI: The need for a clear-cut budgetary allocation and deployment of trained officers for effective implementation of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (PWDVA) has been underlined by women's organisations here.

At the second National Women's Conference for Effective Implementation and Enforcement of PWDVA here earlier this week, the participants called for a clear allocation in the Budget at the Central and State levels for implementation of the Act. Representatives from 23 States attended the conference.

"Implementation of the Act within the existing infrastructure is not possible," said Action India director Gouri Choudhury.

Women's rights activists said the protection officers appointed to look into the cases of domestic violence should be independent of other charges.

Speaking at the conference organised by the National Secretariat-run by Action India, National Alliance of Women president Ruth Manorama called for a community-based response to tackle the problem of domestic violence.

The need for the judiciary to show greater sensitivity towards gender-related issues and domestic violence was also emphasised by the speakers.

A memorandum with recommendations on ways to implement the PWDVA will be presented to the Government departments concerned.
